Today FiReTraCK hosted the special training for the Nairobi Metropolitan Area Urban Search and Rescue Team. That was the first session with search-and-rescue dog handlers from the Kenya Defence Forces 1st Canine Regiment. The session was made possible thanks to the outstanding cooperation with the Regiment and the National Disaster Operation Centre (NDOC).
Three handlers took part in the training together with two Labradors – Shanty and Jerry.
The opening block was delivered by the unit commander and instructor, E.M. Mathenge, who introduced the fundamentals of working with a dog after structural collapse in operational settings: the dog’s characteristics as a partner, its strengths and limitations, safety rules, and the essential elements of canine equipment.
The second lecture focused on the canine training system used within the 1st Canine Regiment. The approach is broadly similar to practices familiar in Poland. Puppies are tested early, and selected dogs begin their development alongside experienced canines. Training is based on positive reinforcement and progresses through indication training, localisation, and then combining both skills into a complete search and rescue task.
To conclude the session, trainer Albert Kościński delivered a lecture on the use of rescue dogs during international USAR operations, using the dog Orion deployment in Türkiye (after the earthquake) as an example. The topics included preparing a dog for deployment, situational awareness for handlers in unfamiliar environments, canine PPE, the most common injuries in USAR dogs, first aid, and recommended contents of a canine medical kit.
